Nigeria moves to save shrinking water bodies as FG, World Bank unveil new blueprint

Federal Government Partners with World Bank to Tackle Water Shortages in Nigeria
ABUJA — The Federal Government has launched a new initiative in collaboration with the World Bank aimed at addressing the critical issue of declining water bodies across Nigeria. The announcement was made on Monday during a workshop focused on the presentation and validation of nine Strategic Catchment Management Plans, part of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes project.
Environment Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal stated that the initiative is designed to restore degraded landscapes, enhance water management practices, and bolster climate resilience, particularly in northern Nigeria, where communities are increasingly impacted by desertification and the diminishing availability of water resources.
“The plan will provide a framework for sustainable watershed management, promote climate-smart agriculture, and support the livelihoods of those dependent on water resources,” Lawal added.
Government officials emphasized that this program, with backing from the World Bank, is anticipated to facilitate long-term environmental restoration and ensure the security of water resources for communities in the most affected regions.
