Nigeria’s average crude oil production in 2025 rose to 1.64 million barrels per day (mbpd), marking a 5.8 percent increase from 1.55 mbpd during the same period in 2024, according to the Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG).
Mr. Adegbite Falade, chairman of IPPG, made the announcement at the recently concluded Nigeria International Energy Summit 2026 (NIES) in Abuja. He highlighted advancements across the oil and gas sector, including enhanced upstream production, expanded gas infrastructure, and a growing domestic refining capacity.
Falade noted that domestic producers now account for over half of Nigeria’s crude output, emphasizing this achievement as an indication of increased local ownership and supportive policy measures.
During the summit, which welcomed President Adama Barrow of The Gambia among other international energy representatives, Falade commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts to sustain and enhance industry reforms. He pointed out that early indicators suggest improved investor confidence and stronger performance in the sector.
However, he also called for urgent strategic reforms and emphasized the need for stronger collaboration and value creation within Nigeria’s energy ecosystem.
“Nigeria’s energy future must be defined by self-sufficiency, competitiveness, and collaboration,” Falade stated. He added that the country needs to move beyond merely exporting raw hydrocarbons to build an ecosystem that creates domestic value, boosts GDP contribution, and provides lasting benefits for all Nigerians.
Referencing the summit’s theme, “Energy for Peace and Prosperity: Securing Our Shared Future,” Falade underscored the crucial role of energy security as a foundation for stability and economic development across Africa.
He urged stakeholders, including operators, regulators, service providers, and investors, to enhance collaboration to ensure sustainable growth and shape a resilient energy future for Nigeria and the continent.
