Kim Jong Un Re-elected as Secretary-General of North Korea’s Workers’ Party
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reaffirmed his position as secretary-general of the Workers’ Party, extending his rule of the country’s sole governing body for another term. This decision came during the party congress on Sunday, a significant event held every five years, according to state news agency KCNA.
The congress, which marked the fourth day of deliberations, also saw the election of members to the Central Committee and included modifications to party rules, although specific details were not disclosed.
Kim has served as the supreme leader since the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in 2011. In 2019, constitutional amendments established Kim’s authority as “monolithic” over all state affairs, formally designating him as head of state.
During the congress, Kim reviewed the party’s achievements over the past five years and outlined strategic goals for the upcoming period. In his opening address last week, he described the past five years as a “proud period” for the party, despite acknowledging challenges such as international sanctions and the global health crisis.
“Our Party faces pressing historical tasks to enhance economic development and improve the people’s standard of living while transforming all areas of state and social life as soon as possible,” Kim said, according to KCNA. He emphasized the need for a vigorous and continuous effort, stressing that there should be “no moment of standstill or stagnation.”
High-ranking officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui, also addressed attendees at the congress.
In a notable shift, Kim has called for prioritizing the nation’s economy alongside its military capabilities, reflecting evolving domestic priorities. He expressed confidence that North Korea had passed through its “worst difficulties” over the last five years and was now entering an era of “optimism and confidence in the future.”
Ahead of the congress, Kim unveiled several nuclear-capable rocket launchers, which he described as “wonderful” and “attractive.” He warned that their deployment would render any opposing force vulnerable, stating, “When this weapon is used, actually, no force would be able to expect God’s protection.”
