NSA Phone-tapping: I’m not sure govt wants to prosecute El-Rufai – Lawyer, Effiong

Attorney Casts Doubt on Prosecution of Former Kaduna Governor
A legal expert, Inibehe Effiong, has expressed skepticism regarding the federal government’s intent to prosecute former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over allegations of phone tapping. Effiong made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s program “The Morning Brief” on Tuesday.
The discussion centered around the accusations against El-Rufai, who has acknowledged that he and others intercepted the phone conversations of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. This admission has sparked significant criticism from various stakeholders, including the presidency, which has called for El-Rufai’s prosecution.
Effiong stated, “I don’t believe this government wants to prosecute El-Rufai based on what he said. I think this is just political theatrics.”
He also questioned the legitimacy of the legal proceedings, noting that as of the date the charges were filed, the State Security Service had not interrogated El-Rufai. “In which serious jurisdiction do you file a charge without speaking to the suspect?” Effiong asked.
The allegations continue to draw widespread attention, raising important questions about the intersection of politics and legal accountability.
