Police Arrest Development Coordinator in Connection with Edda Killings
ABAKALIKI, Ebonyi State — The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Anya Baron-Ogbonnia, coordinator of the Amasiri Development Centre, in relation to the deaths of four individuals in Okporojo, located in the Edda Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Joshua Ukandu announced the arrest during a press briefing on Tuesday. He stated that the apprehension was the result of a collaborative security operation that included personnel from the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Additionally, two traditional rulers from the Amasiri community, HRH Onyaidam Bassey and HRH Godfrey Oko-Obi, are in police custody as part of the ongoing investigation. Ukandu indicated that ten other suspects had been detained previously.
The police spokesperson explained that the incident is tied to a prolonged land dispute between the Okporojo village in Oso Edda and their neighbors in Amasiri. He noted that armed individuals believed to be from Amasiri attacked Okporojo on January 29, resulting in four fatalities and significant property damage.
Ukandu assured the public that investigations are continuing and emphasized the command’s commitment, in collaboration with other security agencies, to ensure that all individuals involved in the incident face justice.
