One of the most expensive sports venues in the world is in Nigeria but it?s rented out for religious services for most of the year - Cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye speaks

Nigerian cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye has raised concerns over the use of the country’s premier cycling facility, the velodrome, which she claims is being rented out for religious activities, leaving athletes with limited access for training.

Speaking after the 2024 Olympics, Ukpeseraye highlighted that despite Nigeria having one of the best cycling tracks in Africa, its potential is being undermined by its unavailability to athletes.

Ukpeseraye, who shared her frustration with Cyclingnews.com, emphasized that the venue located in Abuja, is one of the most expensive sports venues globally, featuring a state-of-the-art wooden track. However, its frequent use for non-sporting events, particularly religious services, has led to a significant reduction in training opportunities for cyclists.

The athlete warned that this continued trend could lead to the decline of cycling in Nigeria, as athletes are being denied the necessary facilities to train and compete at the highest levels. She said;

“We have a very beautiful track; our track is the best in Africa, but we don’t use it. They don’t permit us to use it. One of the most expensive sports venues in the world is in Nigeria, which has a beautiful wooden velodrome. But since it’s rented out for religious services and other activities for most of the year, bikers are not permitted to train there.”
