One Soldier killed as troops foil terrorist attack in Kukawa

Soldier Killed in Multi-Pronged Assault on Kukawa Military Positions
Kukawa—One soldier was killed during a prolonged battle between Nigerian troops and insurgents, who launched a coordinated, multi-pronged assault on military positions late February 20. The clash persisted into the early hours of February 21 and was reinforced by air strikes.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported the details in a post on X, indicating that the attackers utilized gun trucks, motorcycles, and foot soldiers to initiate their offensive from several directions. Despite the onslaught, military personnel mounted a strong defense, eventually forcing the insurgents to retreat while taking some casualties with them.
Following the initial confrontation, air support was deployed to target the fleeing attackers. Makama noted that such air strikes successfully destroyed one gun truck and several motorcycles, further neutralizing additional insurgents.
Subsequent military operations resulted in the recovery of 13 AK-47 rifles, 16 loaded magazines, and three handheld radios, which are believed to have belonged to the attackers. Additionally, evidence suggested that the insurgents evacuated some of their wounded from the battlefield.
While one soldier was killed in the engagement, it was reported that some military equipment sustained damage from rocket fire. Injured personnel were evacuated and are currently in stable condition.
Military authorities emphasized that these coordinated ground and air operations reflect ongoing efforts to apply pressure on insurgent groups and diminish their combat capabilities in the region.
