Otaru of Auchi orders closure of market over alleged incessant kidnappings

Auchi Traditional Ruler Closes Market Amid Security Concerns

AUCHI, Nigeria — Haliru Momoh, the Otaru of Auchi, has ordered the closure of the Hausa Market located at Igbira Camp in Idanilace Village due to rising incidences of kidnapping and other criminal activities in the area.

The decision was announced following a meeting held at the Auchi Royal Palace, which included the Otaru-in-Council and the Divisional Police Officer from the Auchi Police Division. A statement released by Kadiri Jeremiah Enaholo, the Chairman of the Palace Press, outlined the concerns regarding security in the community.

Igbira Camp has gained notoriety as a hotspot for kidnappings, prompting the need for immediate action to restore peace and enhance resident safety.

Among the resolutions from the meeting was a discouragement of ransom payments, as such actions are believed to fuel criminal activity and compromise long-term safety. Enaholo emphasized the appointment of the Auchi Vigilante Group to ensure compliance with the new directives and to implement additional security measures.

Other key resolutions included:

  1. Enforcement of Residential Compliance: Residents must inhabit recognized residential properties. Those found loitering or without proper accommodation are expected to comply or leave the area.

  2. Youth Mobilization for Security: All capable youths are encouraged to join the Vigilante Group to enhance local security and foster a collective responsibility for community safety.

  3. Movement Restrictions: Residents, particularly those on the outskirts of Auchi, are advised to remain indoors by 6:00 p.m. daily and to avoid bush paths and isolated areas after this time.

Enaholo highlighted that these measures are preventive and intended for public safety. He assured the community that they are not directed at law-abiding individuals or groups, but are necessary steps for maintaining harmony.

The Auchi Royal Palace urged residents to remain calm, assist security agencies, and work together to support ongoing efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.
