Oyo police arrest 2 illegal transborder ammunition traffickers

Two Arrested for Illegal Ammunition Trafficking in Oyo State

The Oyo State Police Command announced Friday the arrest of two individuals suspected of trafficking ammunition across international borders.

In a statement issued by Public Relations Officer Olayinka Ayanlade, the suspects were identified as Isiaka Dare, 35, and Taiwo Ayodabo, 33, both from Tede. The arrests took place in Saki town following a coordinated operation by the Command Monitoring Unit.

Ayanlade stated that the suspects were apprehended while reportedly transporting ammunition illegally from the Republic of Benin into Nigeria through unauthorized routes.

Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives executed the operation that led to the arrests. During the search, officers recovered 105 packets of pump-action cartridges concealed in four jerry cans. Each packet contained 25 cartridges, totaling 2,625 cartridges. Additionally, two unregistered motorcycles believed to be used in the illegal transport of the ammunition were also seized.

According to Ayanlade, both suspects have confessed to their involvement and are cooperating with investigators to uncover a broader transnational network and identify other individuals involved in the illicit trade.
