PDP leadership crisis: BoT constitutes reconciliation committee

PDP Board of Trustees Forms Reconciliation Committee Amid Leadership Crisis

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has established a special committee aimed at facilitating internal reconciliation within the party. This initiative follows the recent leadership challenges triggered by a Court of Appeal ruling.

The BoT announced the decision in a communiqué released Wednesday in Abuja, concluding a two-day emergency meeting chaired by Sen. Adolphus Wabara.

The newly formed committee will collaborate with the PDP’s legal team and other stakeholders to address the ongoing leadership crisis. This crisis arose after a March 9 Court of Appeal ruling invalidated the party’s November 2025 National Convention, which had resulted in the formation of the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.

While the BoT disagrees with the court’s ruling, the communiqué indicated that it is awaiting formal legal advice on the next steps. The board expressed concern over internal disputes that have led to costly litigation and negatively impacted the party’s unity.

“The board acknowledges the opportunity provided by the Court of Appeal for reconciliation within the party,” the communiqué stated. It emphasized the importance of addressing the interests of members preparing for the 2027 general elections.

The BoT reaffirmed its commitment to reconciling all party stakeholders and restoring the PDP’s integrity. It highlighted the loyalty of its supporters amid an ongoing e-registration drive, reporting a significant increase in membership.

“The unprecedented surge, despite challenges, affirms the PDP’s status as the preferred party for many Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement read. The board urged all leaders and members to prioritize collective interests over personal agendas to strengthen party unity.

In addition, the board has appointed Dr. Babangida Aliyu as the Secretary of the Board, in accordance with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution, as amended in 2017.

The BoT also commended Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for their unwavering commitment to the party’s stability. The board concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain hopeful and assured them that the PDP is actively working to reposition itself for the future.
