Pies’ push for ‘mini-hub’ with Gold Coast game

Collingwood is lobbying the AFL to play a home game on the Gold Coast in 2025 to help the growth of Australian rules football in Queensland.

9News Melbourne’s chief football reporter Tom Morris has revealed that the Magpies are in talks with the governing body about moving one of their home game to give the club a two-week stint in Queensland during the 2025 winter school holidays.

The game moved north would be one of the club’s two contracted home games at Marvel Stadium — which would see another Victorian club go along for the ride.

The opposing team would most likely be North Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs or St Kilda as they are the only Victorian-based teams to play Collingwood in a home game at the Docklands stadium since 2007.

This is said to create a “mini-hub” in Queensland.

“Collingwood is lobbying the AFL to play one of their 11 home games next year on the Gold Coast,” Morris told 9News.

“They currently have two matches that are locked in for Marvel Stadium, one of them would be moved to Carrara, [Queensland].

“Unlike examples like Melbourne, who’ve moved [games] interstate for financial reasons, my understanding is this is seen as a way to grow the supporter base across the country.

“Under this plan, the Magpies would spend two weeks on the Gold Coast — they’d play against the Suns and host another Victorian team.

“Collingwood has told me tonight conversations are very preliminary and the Pies would look after Victorian members if this happened.

“How they’d do that, I’m not too sure.”

Veteran sports reporter Tony Jones added: “Nor are we too sure what members might actually think of that”.

Through the move, Morris said the club intends to help “grow the supporter base across the country”.
