Plateau Interfaith Council vows to combat violence, promote peace

Plateau State Advisory Council Vows Action Against Conflicts
The Plateau State Advisory Council on Interreligious Harmony has pledged to implement proactive measures aimed at addressing the ongoing conflicts threatening peaceful coexistence in the region.
In a statement, the Council condemned recent violent incidents in the local government areas of Barkin-Ladi, Riyom, and Bassa, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property. The Council also denounced the obstruction of highways and retaliatory attacks in Barkin-Ladi.
Prof. Pandam Yaksat, co-chairman of the interfaith advisory council, expressed sorrow over the violence. “We extend our heartfelt condolences during this critical moment,” he said. “Whatever happens to mankind is the will of God. We urge everyone to exercise patience, vigilance, and adherence to the law.”
Emir Mohammed Sambo II of Wase affirmed that the committee is collaborating with the Plateau State government and security agencies to identify those responsible for the violence. He emphasized the complex nature of the crisis, stating that it cannot be addressed by focusing on a single issue. “We need to take a more proactive approach to understand the root causes,” he said.
Regarding the perceived divisions between Christians and Muslims, Emir Sambo remarked, “I don’t believe there is a divide; rather, people have allowed themselves to become divided.” He urged communities to recognize the motivations of individuals seeking to exploit these divisions for personal gain.
Dr. Julie Sanda, Director General of the Plateau Peace Building Agency, added that her agency is committed to fostering lasting peace in the region.
