Plateau LG boss suspends mining activities, imposes curfew over incessant attacks

Amalau Samuel Amalau, the Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State, has announced the immediate suspension of all mining activities—both legal and illegal—in response to a surge of violence targeting local miners. This decision stems from a series of attacks by gunmen believed to be Fulani militias, which have resulted in the deaths of several youths.

In a statement released on February 1, 2026, Amalau articulated the urgency and necessity of these measures to ensure the safety and protection of lives and property within the local council. He noted that the suspension affects the Tenti and Mandar districts and is part of a broader strategy to address ongoing security challenges in the region.

After consulting with local security agencies and stakeholders, Amalau deemed the halt of mining operations essential to prevent any actions that could worsen the already fragile security environment. Additionally, he introduced a daily curfew in the affected districts, set to run from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., aimed at enhancing security surveillance and allowing law enforcement to fulfill their duties more effectively.

Amalau urged all residents—particularly miners, business operators, and visitors—to strictly follow the new directives, emphasizing that violations of the suspension or curfew will be met with legal consequences. He appealed for calm and vigilance among the populace and encouraged cooperation with security agencies as efforts to restore peace and stability in Bokkos intensify.

This decision and the accompanying curfew are intended to remain in force until further notice, reflecting the grave situation at hand and the commitment of local authorities to resolve ongoing conflicts in their jurisdiction.
