Police arrest fake Navy personnel for fraud in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a fake Nigerian Navy personnel, Ahugu Joshua, who specialised in defrauding unsuspecting victims by generating fake receipts on his bank app.

The spokesperson of the command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, December 19, 2024, said the suspect was found in possession of a fake Nigerian Navy staff ID card, which he used to scam victims, particularly POS vendors and provision store owners.

“Yobe State Police Command has made another significant breakthrough in combating cybercrime and fraud in the state. In a covert operation on December 18, 2024, at 1400hrs, the State Intelligence Department (SID) apprehended Agugu Joshua, 29, of High Court Gizza Plaza, Keffi LGA of Nasarawa state,” the statement read.

“Agugu was found in possession of a fake Nigerian Navy staff ID card, which he used to scam unsuspecting victims, particularly POS vendors and provision store owners. His modus operandi involved generating fake receipts on his Kuda bank app, making it seem like transactions were successful, even when they weren’t.

“To gain his victims’ trust, Agugu would initially make a small, successful transaction. He would then use the app to edit the receipt, delaying the alert to the recipient. This clever tactic allowed him to deceive his victims and get away with their money or goods.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, is cautioning the public to be vigilant and beware of such scams. Remember to verify transactions and receipts, and never trust someone who claims to be from a reputable organization without proper identification.

“Stay informed and Stay safe, report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.”
