Police charge AFL star for off-field incident

Gold Coast Suns youngster Mac Andrew has found himself in hot water after being charged with drink driving by Queensland Police.

The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday morning when the 19-year-old failed a roadside blood alcohol test. He is due to appear in court next month.

Andrew’s club confirmed the news in a statement on Saturday afternoon, indicating that it was “extremely disappointed” by the former No.5 pick’s actions.

“Mac has made a poor decision and understands that he has let a number of people down, as well as the club and the wider Gold Coast community,” Suns GM Wayne Campbell said in the statement.

“He understands the severity of his actions and has shown remorse and as a club we will now look to support Mac and help him through the situation.”

Andrew will receive a club imposed sanction when he returns to training on January 9 and will meet with club bosses as well as the team’s leadership group.

The 201cm youngster was selected with a prized pick in the 2021 national draft, but managed just two games in his rookie season, making his debut in round 20 against the West Coast Eagles.

Andrew created history when he was selected by the Suns, becoming the first player of South Sudanese heritage to be taken with a top five pick in the draft.
