Police launch 24-hour patrol on Lagos coastal road

Lagos Police Launch 24-Hour Anti-Crime Patrols Along Coastal Road

LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has initiated a 24-hour anti-crime patrol along the coastal road to enhance security for commuters and protect construction sites, Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh announced Thursday.

During a demonstration of police presence along the route, Jimoh stated that the initiative aims to deter crime, prevent vandalism, and address theft along the newly opened road, which debuted in December 2025.

Since the road’s opening, the police have deployed 50 patrol teams, each consisting of five officers, stationed at key intersections, crime-prone areas, and other vulnerable spots along the corridor.

“Since the deployment, we have not recorded any incidents of snatching, kidnapping, or robbery in the area, thanks to the strong police presence,” Jimoh noted.

In addition, the command has added four mobile patrol teams that will operate continuously along the coastal road. These teams will fill gaps between fixed posts, monitor areas prone to vandalism, and conduct discreet investigations to apprehend offenders.

The initiative also aims to safeguard road users, construction personnel, and equipment on site. Officers will ensure that installed infrastructure, such as lighting and barriers, remains protected from damage.

Jimoh highlighted that the Lagos State Government is supporting the initiative through the State Security Trust Fund, in collaboration with the Minister of Works, David Umahi. Patrols will extend to adjacent areas that pose security threats, including Kuramo Junction and the Ajah–Lekki corridor.

“Commuters, residents, and businesses along the coastal road should feel assured of their safety,” Jimoh stated. “This initiative complements existing security measures to ensure that Lagos remains secure.”

Designated officers will supervise the patrol teams to ensure ongoing monitoring and prompt responses to any potential threats.

Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, expressed gratitude to the police commissioner for the initiative, emphasizing that the additional patrol vehicles will help mitigate the activities of vandals along the roadway. He recalled previous concerns regarding the theft of manhole covers, steel directional signs, and fencing.

“On behalf of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, we appreciate the Commissioner of Police for this timely response,” Dare said. “We believe these additional patrol teams will effectively curb the activities of vandals on the coastal road.”
