The Ballon d’Or is supposed to be awarded to the best player in the world but often, your form over the past year can decide who wins the gong.
If you’ve had a solid year and won a major trophy or two, you’re far more likely to win the Ballon d’Or – which begs the question: whose World Cup performances have earned them places on the podium?
In recent years, big stars of the summer have earned BDO shouts. In 2018, Antoine Griezmann got a top-three finish for winning the World Cup with France and Europa League with Atletico Madrid. Four years prior, it was Manuel Neuer while in 2010, Xavi and Andres Iniesta both got onto the podium for their World Cup-winning heroics.
