June 21 2002 was a Sliding Doors moment for the United States. Men’s soccer had never been in the spotlight like this before.
And when the Stars and Stripes met three-time champions Germany in the last eight, they were the better team for most of the game. A corner came in for now-manager Gregg Berhalter, he got a foot to it and it was cleared off the line… by a German hand.
A penalty wasn’t given and the Germans triumphed 1-0. They managed to get all the way to the final in Japan and South Korea, getting beaten 2-0 by an R9-supercharged Brazil.
We’ll never know if the path of a sport could have been altered forever in that moment – and today, we’re just looking for you to tell us the Germans who played that day. How many can you name in three minutes?
