Russia’s Putin holds video call with China’s Xi | Vladimir Putin News

Putin and Xi Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties Amid Global Instability

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in a video call to explore strategies for enhancing cooperation and managing their respective relations with the United States amid rising international tensions.

This dialogue follows increased interest among several Western nations in engaging with China, particularly after tensions escalated with former U.S. President Donald Trump over tariffs and his controversial proposal for the U.S. to acquire Greenland from NATO ally Denmark.

Notably, both the British and Canadian prime ministers visited Beijing last month, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is scheduled to travel to China later this month.

During the call, Putin characterized the diplomatic relationship between Russia and China as a “stabilizing factor” in a world marked by growing instability. A transcript released by the Kremlin on Wednesday detailed his remarks, highlighting the commitment of both nations to maintain close coordination across global and regional agendas. He underscored their collaboration within various multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, emphasizing the essential role of the “Russian-Chinese tandem.”

In his address, Putin expressed Russia’s strong support for China’s sovereignty and security efforts, as well as for both countries’ social and economic progress and their right to choose their development paths independently.

Xi, speaking through an interpreter, urged the two nations to devise a “grand plan” to further advance their bilateral relations. He noted that these relations are progressing positively and called for maintaining high-level exchanges and enhancing practical cooperation in various areas, according to China’s state broadcaster, CCTV.

In relation to U.S. engagement, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov disclosed that Putin has accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China in the first half of 2026. Xi previously made a state visit to Russia in May 2022.

The conversation also touched upon the countries’ mutual views regarding the United States. Ushakov noted that their assessments are largely aligned, particularly concerning Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace” initiative in Gaza.

“Russia and China advocate for equal and mutually beneficial cooperation based on international law and the United Nations Charter,” Ushakov stated.

Putin had previously expressed gratitude to Trump for extending an invitation to join the Board of Peace, indicating that Moscow would take the proposal under consideration. While there has been no direct commentary from China regarding the initiative, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting the international system centered around the United Nations, regardless of shifting global dynamics.
