Kano Senator Offers Support Following Market Fire
KANO, Nigeria — Following a devastating fire at Singer Market, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has pledged N100 million to assist affected traders. The fire, which occurred Saturday, caused extensive damage, with losses estimated in the billions of naira.
On Sunday, Jibrin visited the market and was greeted by Alhaji Junaidu Zakari, chairman of the Singer Market Development Association, and hundreds of traders impacted by the disaster.
Jibrin stated that the financial aid aims to alleviate the hardships faced by those who lost their livelihoods in the blaze. “This fire outbreak and the enormous losses recorded have affected all of us,” he said. “Commerce is the mainstay of Kano, so we are deeply touched by this incident.”
In addition to immediate financial support, the Deputy Senate President committed to facilitating the establishment of a modern fire-control facility at the market to enhance future safety measures and emergency response efforts.
Zakari noted that this incident marks the second major fire in the market recently, with total losses exceeding N5 billion. He expressed gratitude for Jibrin’s visit and the financial support, underscoring the positive impact of his assistance on the community.
Accompanying Jibrin during his visit were the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata; the Kano State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Malam Salisu Sagir Takai; members of the Kano State House of Assembly; and various special advisers and aides.
