Six killed, several injured in Benue auto crash

Fatal Accident on Makurdi-Gboko Highway Claims Six Lives

At least six people have been confirmed dead, and several others injured following a serious road accident on the Makurdi-Gboko Highway in the Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.

The collision occurred on Monday, involving a Toyota bus and a Sharon bus in a head-on crash. Bem Agbuku, the Security Secretary of Tarka Local Government Area, reported that the incident took place shortly after the Agudo axis, near the Tugh-Tugh Sharp Bend.

Agbuku commended Tarka LGA Chairman Raphael Yenge, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other security personnel for their prompt response, which facilitated the swift evacuation of the injured for medical care. The bodies of the deceased have been transported to a local mortuary, while the injured have been taken to St. Christopher Clinic in Wannune.

Kehinde Dahunsi, the Benue State Sector Commander of the FRSC, confirmed the incident on Tuesday. He reported that a male child was among the deceased. According to Dahunsi, excessive speeding was the primary cause of the collision.

“The accident occurred yesterday,” he said. “From the information we received, six individuals—three males, two females, and one male child—lost their lives in the incident. About twenty-three people were rescued unharmed and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.”

Dahunsi urged drivers to adhere to speed limits to prevent similar tragedies. “The driver was over-speeding and lost control, which led to the head-on collision,” he stated. “Our advice to all drivers is to stop excessive speeding and follow speed regulations.”
