Sokoto residents react to report of mass exodus amid bandit attacks

Residents of Bargaja Community Refute Mass Relocation Claims Amid Security Concerns

BARGAJA, Sokoto State — Some residents of the Bargaja community in Isa Local Government Area have denied widespread reports of mass relocation due to ongoing security challenges in the region.

Local sources indicated that some individuals began moving to other towns following a series of attacks attributed to banditry. However, a resident, who requested anonymity, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that the relocation was not as extensive as has been depicted in social media videos.

The source noted that while a few residents had initially considered leaving, the presence of military personnel and local security operatives led many to reconsider their decision. According to public commentator Malam Altine Guyawa, who resides in the area, a bandit attack on Saturday prompted some community members to contemplate relocation as a precautionary measure.

Guyawa stated that local vigilantes had previously worked in conjunction with security forces to manage such unexpected attacks, and the heightened security presence has helped reinforce these efforts.

Another anonymous source reported that the community had faced sporadic instances of banditry, with both security personnel and local defenders engaged in confrontations that resulted in casualties on both sides. This has understandably fueled fear among certain residents.

In light of the recent incidents, a military source confirmed that troops had successfully thwarted an attempted attack by bandits on Bargaja and neighboring areas. The military’s rapid response team assured residents that the situation had stabilized, countering rumors of a mass exodus.

The source indicated that earlier photographs circulating online may have depicted only those who had evacuated temporarily. He stated, “The action has demonstrated the effective deterrence and proactiveness of the Nigerian Army operatives who successfully averted an attack on the villages.”

Additionally, the Sokoto Police Command, through Public Relations Officer Mr. Ahmad Rufa’i, reported that a discreet investigation into the incidents is underway and promised to keep the public informed about developments.
