Super Eagles: Chelle gave Lookman free hand – Babangida

Tijani Babangida on Ademola Lookman’s Role Under Super Eagles Manager Eric Chelle

Former Nigerian international Tijani Babangida has shared insights regarding the tactical approach of Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle during the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco.

In a recent appearance on Sunday Oliseh’s “Global Football Insights,” Babangida noted that Chelle has given forward Ademola Lookman a flexible role within the squad. He indicated that Chelle has eliminated the traditional rigidity of the number 11 position, allowing Lookman greater freedom to maneuver on the pitch.

Babangida explained that the new system introduced by the Italian coach mirrors Nigeria’s traditional football style. “You can only assign the number 7, but the number 11 is freely available,” Babangida said. “This allows Lookman, as well as other strikers, to exploit spaces and increase attacking opportunities with the involvement of more midfielders.”

He emphasized the effectiveness of Chelle’s system, suggesting that it has resonated well with the players. “Nigerians were pleasantly surprised by how well the Super Eagles performed. The strategy worked effectively with the team, and I hope we can maintain that positive atmosphere,” Babangida expressed.

The Super Eagles are set to compete in the AFCON, and expectations are high for their performance under Chelle’s leadership.
