Super Falcons Set For WAFCON Camp As Morocco Seeks Tournament Postponement

Super Falcons Begin Training Camp for 2026 WAFCON
The Super Falcons of Nigeria will commence their training camp for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on February 20 in Abuja. This initiative marks the beginning of preparations for the continental tournament scheduled for later this year.
Head coach Justine Madugu will oversee the training camp before the team departs for Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to participate in the WAFU B invitational tournament. Ghana and Senegal will also compete in this event, which runs from February 27 to March 7.
This invitational tournament is viewed as a crucial step in Nigeria’s preparation for WAFCON, with additional friendly matches planned prior to the finals. The Super Falcons have been placed in Group C, where they will confront Zambia, Egypt, and Malawi, setting the stage for a competitive group stage.
However, the tournament’s schedule is in question following Morocco’s official request for a postponement. The host nation has approached the Confederation of African Football (CAF), citing severe fixture congestion and operational challenges within its domestic league.
Morocco’s Botola Pro league has faced multiple disruptions in recent months due to the country’s involvement in significant international events, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the African Nations Championship, and the Arab Cup. These events have strained stadium availability, security arrangements, and logistics.
CAF has yet to provide an official response, but it is reported that discussions are ongoing regarding a potential adjustment to the tournament timeline.
The 2026 WAFCON is particularly significant, as it will also serve as a qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the top four semi-finalists earning automatic berths to the global competition.
