Suspected Tranformer vandal lynched in Calabar South

Lynching of Suspected Vandal Occurs in Calabar
CALABAR, Cross River State — A suspected vandal, believed to be involved in cable and transformer theft, was lynched by an angry mob early Tuesday morning in Calabar.
The incident took place around 5:00 a.m. on Mayne Avenue in the Calabar South Local Government Area, according to eyewitness accounts.
Residents reported that the man, whose identity remains unknown, was detained by a local vigilante group, while other alleged gang members reportedly escaped the scene.
The area, including Mayne Avenue and Palm Street, has experienced frequent power outages attributed to ongoing transformer vandalism.
Amos Akpan, a local resident, noted that community members had recently pooled their resources to replace stolen components from a transformer, only to have another part taken later that same week. He accused the vandals of intentionally targeting electrical infrastructure, attributing the ongoing blackouts to their actions. Akpan alleged that the victim was part of a group specializing in transformer vandalism in the neighborhood.
Authorities arrived at the scene to recover the man’s remains.
Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer SP Eitiokpa Sunday Akata confirmed that the command was aware of the incident and would release further information as it becomes available.
