Suspected Vandal Electrocuted in Awka Incident
Awka, Anambra State — The management of FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (FPEDL) has confirmed the electrocution of a suspected vandal at a power facility in Awka, Anambra State.
In a statement released by Mr. Izunna Okafor, Head of Communications for FPEDL, the incident occurred early Tuesday, February 24, 2026. According to the statement, an explosion at a transformer substation on Ogechukwu Street triggered the incident, leading to the death of the individual, who allegedly attempted to tamper with the facility.
Okafor explained that the explosion resulted from unlawful interference with FirstPower’s electrical infrastructure by a person reportedly dressed in a security uniform. “The yet-to-be-identified individual was immediately electrocuted in the process,” he added.
Local law enforcement, specifically the Anambra State Police Command, has been notified and has since removed the body from the site. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In response to the event, FPEDL Managing Director Mr. Okechukwu Okafor condemned vandalism and energy theft, which he said undermine efforts to deliver stable electricity supply to customers throughout Anambra State. He articulated concerns over the financial losses and service interruptions resulting from such actions, as well as the dangers they pose to both the perpetrators and the public.
“FPEDL appeals to residents and community leaders to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around electricity installations,” Okafor stated. He emphasized that the protection of power infrastructure is a shared responsibility and that community cooperation is essential in safeguarding public assets.
FirstPower remains committed to providing safe and efficient electricity services and will continue to collaborate with security agencies and stakeholders to address vandalism and protect its network facilities.
