Police arrest Principal and Vice over beating of student to death in Zaria

The police in Kaduna statement have arrested Principal and Vice Principal of Al-Azhar School in Zaria, Kaduna State for their alleged involvement in corporal punishment that led the death of Marwanu Nuhu Sambo, a JSS3 student of the school on Friday, October 21.

Sambo was allegedly brutally beaten by the Principal, Vice Principal and prefects of Al-Azhar Academy for absenteeism in school.

When contacted to confirm the statement by the school’s management that those involved in the ugly incident have been arrested, the Police Command’s PPRO ASP Mansir Hassan said;

“Police is fully aware of the incident and we are in control of the situation. Two suspects have been arrested in connection to the development. The CP has directed a full scale investigation on the matter and we will get to ita root cause.”

It was gathered that Sambo was paraded at the Assembly for missing classes. He was subjected to merciless punishments including over a hundred strokes of the cane.

“At the assembly, the Principal ordered that Marwanu should be given 105 strokes of cane. Thereafter, they took him to the office, removed his clothes and trousers and continued beating him with sticks on the head and back and his body.

The Principal later handed him over to the school prefects who continued beating him with sticks until one of his teeth fell off. It was at that point that the deceased went into coma. But instead of rushing him to the hospital, the prefects brought him out and dumped his body in the school premises near the male toilets until the closing time.

Cries from other students in the school who watched in trepidation reportedly attracted other teachers who rushed to the scene where they found out that the boy has given up the ghost,” a source said

However in a statement released, the school management explained the punishment carried out is not part of its policy and that the officers that imposed “the irresponsible punishment did it without consultation.”

“It is deeply saddened by the incident that lead to the death of its student and prays almighty Allah to forgive the shortcoming of the deceased, grant him jannat elfirdous as his final abode and give his family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable lost. Furthermore, the officers that committed this act were suspended from the school forthwith and handed over to the Nigerian Police Force for investigation and further action. Finally the School is closed for academic activities till further notice.”

The Principal of Nkaleke Echara Secondary School, Ojiegbe, Simon Ominyi, and his teacher, Moses Nwibo, were both murdered in the school by unknown gunmen on October 13, 2023.

Spokesperson of the command, ASP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, told NAN in Abakaliki that the command had commenced investigation on the matter.

“It is very bad for a sane man or woman to kill a teacher, who only work with chalk and pen,”

He said that the union had yet to ascertain the reason behind the killing.

Also, the state Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Chidi Igboji, said it was a “shameful act” to kill teachers.

Sexual Harassment: Law faculty principal officers are now women - UNICAL VC

Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi has revealed some of the measures taken to address the sexual harassment crisis rocking the law faculty of the institution.

Recall that the Dean of Faculty of Law, Prof Cyril Ndifon was suspended after some law students embarked on a protest, accusing him of sexually harassing them.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Saturday, August 26, Prof. Obi said that the management of the school carried out a “clean sweep” of the law faculty, ensuring that all the principal officers at the faculty are women.

The V.C also said that they’ve put in place measures to curtail cases of sexual harassment between lecturers and students of the institution. She said;

“We have put up measures to see that, going forward, such occurrences are curtailed. You can’t completely eradicate sexual harassment in schools because it happens everywhere, every country. It does happen but the impunity, the serial abuse, the way and manner in which this is done, is where it becomes a problem.

“In my university, we have put up so many measures that we know, going forward, nobody in the Faculty of Law will hold students to ransom and make any female student so vulnerable to having amoral relationship.

“We have put about seven committees in place. There is a committee to assign students to supervisors, because there are accusations that the suspended dean took all female students to supervise and that made them vulnerable to his advances. Now, there is a committee to handle that.

“There is a committee to look at mobilisation to law school which students alleged in their protest letter to us that they (staff) use that as an intimidation, as a way to getting some of them to succumb, that if they don’t accept, that they may not be mobilised to law school. We have set up a committee to do that.

“There is a result vetting committee. We have also made a clean sweep in the faculty where we have the acting dean, for now, a woman; the sub dean, a woman; the faculty officer, a woman; we want to see that the students are protected.”

Adamu made these remarks during a meeting with the Progressives Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.

According to Adamu, the list put forward by Akpabio and Abbas did not originate from the APC’s secretariat. He stated, “On Saturday, I received a courtesy call from the President of the Senate and his Deputy. The following day, Sunday, the Speaker and his Deputy Speaker paid me a visit as part of Sallah’s homage.

“However, I have recently learned through online media rumours that announcements have been made in the Senate and House of Representatives. The national headquarters of the party, the National Working Committee (NWC), has neither provided such information nor communicated any decisions regarding the appointment of officers.”

Adamu further emphasised that until the NASS leadership is formally addressed in writing, in accordance with customary procedures, any announcements made by the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, or Deputy Speaker should not be regarded as originating from the party’s secretariat. He asserted that the APC has no intention of deviating from established traditions and protocols.

Meanwhile, Governor Uzodimma pledged to bridge the “communication gap” between the four most senior leaders of the NASS and the APC. Recognising that both Akpabio and Abbas are members of the APC, Uzodimma assured that the party would activate its internal mechanisms to resolve the matter.

Earlier, Senator Akpabio unveiled the names of the majority principal officers, which included Senator Opeyemi Bamidele from Ekiti State as the Senate Leader, Senator Dave Umahi from Ebonyi State as the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume from Borno State as the Chief Whip, and Senator Lola Ashiru from Kwara State as the Deputy Chief Whip. In addition, Akpabio announced the minority principal officers, including Senator Simon Davou (Plateau North – PDP) as the Minority Leader, Oyewunmi Olarere (Osun West – PDP) as the Deputy Minority Leader, Darlington Nwokeocha (Abia Central – LP) as the Minority Whip, and Rufai Hanga (Kano Central – NNPP) as the Deputy Minority Whip.

Similarly, Speaker Abbas announced the majority principal officers, with Julius Ihonvbere (APC – Edo) appointed as the House Majority Leader, Halims Abdullahi (APC – Kogi) as the Deputy Majority Leader, Bello Kumo (APC – Gombe) as the Chief Whip, and Adewunmi Onanuga (APC – Ogun) as the Deputy Chief Whip.

School principal leaves wife of 7 years for

A woman in Kadoma, Zimbabwe, has been left reeling with shock and disappointment after her husband of seven years dumped her for a cook employed at the same school where he serves as principal.

H-Metro reported that Tambudzai Patricia Sibanda discovered the affair after stumbling upon messages on her husband’s phone. She confronted her husband Givemore Bere and his new lover Veronica Mationesa Kachigwe, at an outing at Laluna.

Sharing her story, the lady wondered why her husband will abandon their marriage of 7 years for a mere cook at their workplace at Great Hood Academy. She also highlighted their past shared experiences, including their joint business ventures and mutual support.

She further revealed that she hoped for a stable and loving partnership, having endured years of being alone after the death of her first husband.

Patricia said;

“I am disappointed with him. How could he dump me for his cook after seven years together? We have supported each other in our business ventures, only for him to betray me now. I became the mother of his family, and he became a father to mine. Everything seemed to be going well.”

While Bere remained tight-lipped when contacted for a comment, Veronica vehemently denied being a home wrecker. She insisted that Patricia Tambudzai was merely an ex-girlfriend seeking to tarnish her reputation, emphasizing that she had not broken up a marriage but was involved with a widower.

She said;

“I deny the allegations that I took someone’s husband, my boyfriend’s wife died some time ago. “The one who is claiming to be Mr. Bere’s wife is his ex-girlfriend. “They were never husband and wife. She is just heartbroken that they got separated and she is trying to tarnish my image. I don’t know why the two broke up and I feel it’s not fair to pin it on me.”

School principal and gym teacher fired after allegedly having sex romps on campus

An elementary school principal and a gym teacher from Georgia, USA who engaged in a years-long affair have both been fired after allegedly having sex on school grounds.

Some of the sexcapades between Banks County Elementary School Principal Dana Simmons, who is married, and physical education teacher Dylan Charles were even caught on camera by Charles? wife, WSB-TV reported, citing an internal report that was conducted by an external firm.

The school affair came to light after Simmons accused Charles of accessing secret school district information either by bugging her office or having a source inside the county?s school board, the report issued at the end of January 2023 states.

After that issue was settled, Charles looked for district officials and admitted to having an affair with Simmons and said they even had sex at the elementary school, as well as off-campus, the report states.

Simmons reportedly claimed at first the two only had an ?inappropriate friendship? and denied any sexual contact.

But Charles came with apparent receipts of the sexual encounters, including one of him and Simons kissing mouth to mouth and another photo of a naked man and woman inside a vehicle having sex that Charles said was him and Simmons, the report states.

Other photos showed a woman identified as Simmons performing oral sex on a man inside a vehicle and a naked woman standing inside a room that is near Simmons? office at the school, the report states.

Texts between him, his wife and Simmons were also handed over to internal investigators, according to the report.

?Again, there is no context added to the pictures or the text messages, but the totality of the evidence tends to support Mr. Charles?s claim of an inappropriate relationship between Dr. Simmons and Mr. Charles,? the report states.

During her interview with the outside firm, Simmons fessed up to having a sexual relationship with Charles, but denied having sex on school grounds, according to the report. She insisted the sexual liaisons were set up by the PE teacher?s wife Kelsey Charles and that she even watched the two have sex, the report states.

A confidant of Simmons told investigators she once saw a text to Simmons from Kelsey Charles that point blank asked, ?Would you like to f? my husband??

Wife Kelsey Charles, in an interview with the independent investigative firm, alleged Simmons made promises to both her and her husband that she?d help their careers and also claimed Simmons was ?manipulating? them, the report says. She also accused Simmons of pressuring her to allow her to sleep with her husband, the report states.

?There is conclusive evidence of a sexual relationship between Dr. Simmons and Mr. Charles,? staff from internal investigators John Grant & Dr. Paul Shaw wrote.

?Pictures, Video, Admissions by both parties, Verification by Kelsey Charles.?

The firm additionally concluded evidence indicated sexual activity occurred at Banks County Elementary School.

The school district told WSB-TV in a statement ?the educators involved are no longer teaching Banks County students,? but stressed no crime had taken place. The two resigned, the Macon Telegraph reported.

?Upon receiving allegations involving the matter at hand, the District immediately hired independent investigators to conduct an investigation and provide a report of findings,? Banks County Superintendent Ann Hopkins said in a statement to WSB-TV.

?The investigative report in question was reviewed by law enforcement for evidence of criminal activity and none was found. The educators involved are no longer teaching Banks County students.

?The safety and well-being of our students is always our first priority. The investigation into this event did not yield any indication that student safety or security was compromised.?
