Team GB’s 4x100m Olympic relay team ordered to hand back their Tokyo 2020 silver medals and certificates after CJ Ujah tested positive for banned substances

The British Olympic Association has been odered to hand back the 4x100m relay silver medals won in Tokyo by CJ Ujah and his teammates.

UjahBritish athlete, specializing as a sprinter, is facing a ban of up to four years after testing positive for two prohibited substances in the immediate aftermath of helping Team GB to second place in Tokyo last summer.

The BOA has now been told to return the medals won by Ujah, Zharnel Hughes, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, and Richard Kilty following an episode that ranks among the darkest in the history of British sport.

In a pointed statement, BOA CEO Andy Anson said: ‘It is with real sadness that we have had to ask for the medals, certificates and pins back, especially for the three athletes who have been affected through no fault of their own.

”However, this is the CAS ruling and we must abide by it, just as we have been clear that must happen to other nations whose athletes have broken doping rules.

‘It is heart-breaking for Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Zharnel Hughes, but especially for Richard Kilty, who only competed in one event in Tokyo. We have written to them all to ensure they know their individual status is not diminished in the eyes of everyone at the BOA.’

The Court of Arbitration annulled Britain’s relay result in February. Ujah had claimed he ‘unknowingly’ consumed a contaminated supplement.
