There is only one CAN in Nigeria – Christian leaders warn against duplicate

Christian Association of Nigeria Clarifies Organizational Structure

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a statement to clarify its organizational framework and operations, emphasizing that it operates as a single national entity based in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the association, its activities are organized through officially recognized branches as outlined in Article 8(2)(1)(A-D) of its amended 2021 Constitution. These branches include zonal, state (including the Federal Capital Territory), local government, and district or ward unit branches.

In a statement released on Wednesday, CAN asserted that it does not recognize any divisions termed “Northern CAN” or “Southern CAN.” The association cautioned that any individual or group claiming such titles is in violation of its Constitution, particularly Article 8(3)(6), which prohibits the unauthorized use of the CAN name or acronym by any unauthorized person, group, region, or organization.

The association reiterated its commitment to unity, referencing its motto from John 17:21, “That they may be one.” It urged the public to avoid engaging with any unauthorized entities using the names “Northern CAN,” “Southern CAN,” or any other variations. It warned that continued use of these names may result in legal action for infringement of CAN’s constitutional rights.

The statement was signed by prominent leaders within the organization, including His Eminence Archbishop (Dr.) Daniel C. Okoh, President; Apostle Professor Samson A. Fatokun, General Secretary; and heads of major blocs such as the Christian Council of Nigeria, Organization of African Instituted Churches, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, and the Evangelical Church Winning All.

CAN appealed to the public to respect its established structure and branches as defined in its Constitution.
