They’re supportive, very confident’ – Ayra Starr praises Nigerian men after backlash

Ayra Starr Praises Nigerian Men on ‘Way Up with Angela Yee’

Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr has commended Nigerian men for their support and confidence during a recent appearance on Way Up with Angela Yee.

Starr likened Nigerian men to their New York counterparts, asserting that they are caring and steadfast partners. “Nigerian men love to take care of their women. They are very supportive of their wives or girlfriends,” she said. “They are very confident, so it is almost the same thing as New York men. But you know, men are men. A man is a man still. It is a universal thing.”

Her remarks come amid a backdrop of controversy. Recently, Starr faced significant criticism on social media from many Nigerian men, who claimed her advocacy for feminism did not align with her actions. Critics pointed to her enthusiastic response to meeting Chris Brown and her dance video featuring Naira Marley’s song, suggesting these instances contradicted her feminist stance.

Additionally, Starr has previously addressed criticisms regarding her fashion choices, stating in 2023 that her critics are neither her “pastor” nor “mother.”

Starr’s remarks have generated conversations about the expectations of public figures and the interplay between personal expression and public perception.
