Thousands Gather in Tehran Following Khamenei’s Death Amid U.S.-Israeli Assault
Tehran, Iran — Thousands of mourners convened in Enghelab (Revolution) Square in central Tehran on Sunday, following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei amid an ongoing U.S.-Israeli military assault.
The crowd, dressed predominantly in black and many visibly emotional, waved Iranian flags and held photographs of the late cleric, who had led Iran since 1989. Their assembly came on the second day of strikes targeting Iranian government facilities, as confirmed by state television shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced Khamenei’s death. The 86-year-old leader had been labeled “one of the most evil people in history” by Trump.
In response to Khamenei’s killing, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement vowing “severe, decisive” retaliation against those responsible. The IRGC further declared its intention to launch what it described as the “most ferocious” counteroperation in history against U.S. and Israeli military targets, particularly in Gulf nations already reeling from significant Iranian strikes.
In a stark warning, Trump stated that any retaliatory action from Iran would provoke a response of unprecedented intensity.
As tensions escalated, residents in Doha, Dubai, and Manama reported additional explosions, and air raid sirens were heard across central Israel. The Israeli military confirmed its engagement in response to missile fire originating from Iranian forces.
