Tigers explain Maguire sacking

The Wests Tigers have sacked coach Michael Maguire.

The club released a statement on Tuesday afternoon confirming the news.

“Wests Tigers sincerely thanks Michael for all his hard work and effort over the past three and a half years,” the club said.

“For the rest of the season Brett Kimmorley will take over as interim coach.”

Tigers’ head of football Tim Sheens explained the decision to part ways with Maguire was about giving the club certainty moving forward to allow them to build their roster.

“I have had a good look at things over the last week and a half and where we were halfway through the season,” Sheens told the media on Tuesday evening.

“Everyone loved to call it a review. I like to think it was a look back at where we were last year when there were issues about Madge being here.

“This was before I got here. In the eight months since things haven’t improved and we are in our fourth year, so in real terms my recommendation was and particularly for this reason: We are as most clubs are looking at next season and the season after and our recruitment.

“For instance players off-contract this year in November can be discussed. Players off-contract can be moved straight away. Players that have got a year to go can be signed.

“I couldn’t say that Michael would be here in three years’ time or four years’ time for that matter.”

Maguire is the second NRL coach to part ways with his club on Tuesday, after Nathan Brown was axed by the Warriors just a few hours beforehand.

The Tigers board conducted a mid-season review last week where it was decided Maguire should not continue in the job.

He ran training on Tuesday morning but is reportedly set to inform his players of his departure on Tuesday afternoon.

After 13 rounds, the Tigers sit 13th on the NRL ladder with three wins to their name.

Maguire took over from Ivan Cleary four years ago but the team has slipped backwards on the ladder each season since.

The Tigers have not featured in finals since 2011.

Maguire is the third coach to lose his job this season. Trent Barrett quit his post at the Bulldogs last month.
