Tinubu, German Chancellor Merz pledge collaboration on security, power

Nigeria and Germany Strengthen Bilateral Ties

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have pledged to bolster bilateral relations, focusing on collaboration in security, energy, and railway development.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed the agreement in a statement on Wednesday. The discussions took place during a telephone conversation where the leaders also explored partnerships in the creative arts and skill development, marking an expansion into non-traditional sectors.

In addressing Nigeria’s energy needs, President Tinubu stated, “We will require assistance with power transmission as part of our Presidential Power Initiative.” Chancellor Merz indicated that “Siemens is ready to assist, and Deutsche Bank is willing to finance the project.”

The dialogue also covered security concerns in the Sahel region. President Tinubu emphasized the necessity of military and intelligence support, remarking, “The Sahel corridor is bad and needs our support. Intelligence support reconnaissance is needed.”

Nigeria and Germany have maintained diplomatic relations for 65 years. Chancellor Merz welcomed the strengthening of ties, expressing anticipation for the arrival of Nigeria’s new ambassador to Germany.

He further highlighted the role of arts in fostering cultural connections, advocating for the establishment of the Great Museum of African Arts. The conversation began at 2:01 p.m. and concluded around 2:10 p.m.
