Tragic Accident Claims 14 Lives Returning from Traditional Wedding

Umuahia, Nigeria — A tragic accident claimed the lives of 14 traders from Isi Gate Market on Saturday evening as they were returning from a traditional wedding in Enugu State.

The collision, which occurred around 6:45 PM on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, involved a Toyota Coaster bus and a Mercedes truck. Initial reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that eleven passengers died at the scene, while three others succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Several additional passengers are reported to be in critical condition.

The victims, who typically operate their businesses along Bonny Street by Owerri Road in Umuahia, had traveled to Enugu to celebrate the marriage of a fellow trader.

In the wake of the tragedy, the area around Bonny Street was notably subdued on Sunday afternoon, as many shop owners closed their businesses in tribute to their deceased colleagues. A number of traders present were visibly grieving, reflecting the profound impact of the accident on the local community.

Franklin Agbakoba, the Enugu State Sector Commander for the FRSC, confirmed the details of the incident, emphasizing the necessity for safety on the roads.
