Transformer explosion razes three shops in Benue

Fire Destroys Three Shops at Aliade Main Market in Benue State

GWER EAST, Benue State — A fire that erupted Friday morning following a transformer explosion has destroyed three shops at the entrance of the Aliade Main Market in Gwer East Local Government Area.

Witnesses reported that the explosion of the electricity transformer released thick smoke and flames, prompting traders and passers-by to flee the area as the fire spread rapidly. The blaze consumed two provision stores and a phone charging unit, which were unable to withstand the intensity of the flames.

Mr. Nicodemus Anula, the owner of the charging unit, confirmed that his shop was completely destroyed, along with all goods and equipment stored inside.

While the fire caused extensive damage to property, there have been no reports of injuries or casualties. In the wake of the incident, traders and local residents voiced concerns regarding the positioning of the transformer, calling for a review of safety measures in the market.

They urged relevant authorities and electricity distribution companies to conduct urgent inspections of power installations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
