Joint Task Force Foils Boko Haram Ambush in Borno

Borno, Nigeria — Troops from the Joint Task Force North East, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, successfully thwarted an ambush attempt by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on February 13.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, the incident took place around 5:35 a.m. when troops, along with Civilian Joint Task Force volunteers, were conducting a night patrol at Papa 4, approximately 4.1 kilometers from a Forward Operating Base.

The troops reportedly observed Boko Haram elements attempting to cross the Main Supply Route toward Nigeria from the Cameroon side. Upon detecting the insurgents, military personnel engaged them with heavy gunfire, prompting the attackers to retreat.

Following the engagement, troops conducted an operation in the area and recovered two sacks containing items with inscriptions linked to phone numbers and names of alleged senders and receivers. One of the sacks was traced to a sender in Kano, while the receiver was identified in Maiduguri.

The contents of the sacks included 28 scarves, 10 Kampala materials, three praying mats, three copies of the Qur’an, various religious texts, four cashmere materials, 40 bicycle parts, a sewing machine, machine oil, a measuring tape, a screwdriver, three eye drops, and four packs of ampicillin.

Further searches in the area yielded no additional items. Military sources confirmed that troops will continue to maintain heightened vigilance and readiness to obstruct terrorist activities within their operational area.
