Truck crushes toddler, two others on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

Three Killed, Several Injured in Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Accident

LAGOS — A tragic accident on Friday at the Toll-Gate area of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a toddler. An articulated truck lost control around 2:00 PM and collided with commuters waiting at a bus stop.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed that six additional people sustained injuries in the incident, which involved a total of 15 individuals.

Eyewitnesses reported that the white Howo Sino truck, registered as T4995LA, experienced brake failure, causing it to strike multiple vehicles and pedestrians. The accident also involved two yellow commercial buses, with registration numbers SMK 199YK and AGL 394YA, an LT commercial bus (FKJ 360YH), and two Suzuki yellow buses (98YL and KSF 23YA).

“The truck reportedly failed to stop, crushing commuters who were attempting to board a bus and damaging several vehicles along its path,” Akinbiyi stated. He confirmed that among the injured, three people—two adults and a toddler—died at the scene.

Akinbiyi expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged operators of articulated vehicles to conduct regular maintenance to prevent future incidents. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that trucks are properly serviced before journeys, and recommended that traders remove goods displayed on walkways or road edges to reduce hazards for commuters.
