Truck driver arrested after colliding with bus in Lagos

Lagos Traffic Authority Apprehends Truck Driver After Head-On Collision

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has detained the driver of an articulated truck following a serious collision with a commercial bus on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The incident took place on Tuesday at the Mosafejo-Aradagun section of the highway.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred when the truck driver made an illegal U-turn at an unauthorized point, colliding forcefully with an oncoming Mazda commercial bus, which bears the registration number FST 946 YK.

Three male passengers from the commercial bus sustained critical injuries as a result of the crash. Responding to the incident, LASTMA officials collaborated with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The injured individuals were extricated from the wreckage and transported to a local general hospital for urgent medical care.

In an effort to maintain safety, traffic officials promptly cleared the damaged vehicles from the roadway and managed traffic in the vicinity. Officers from the Badagry Divisional Police Command provided additional security support.

In a statement regarding the incident, Hon. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, extended his sympathies to the injured victims and their families.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of this unfortunate accident. We wish them a speedy and full recovery,” Giwa stated.

He cautioned truck drivers and operators of heavy-duty vehicles against reckless driving and violations of traffic regulations, emphasizing the risks posed to public safety. “Illegal U-turns and other dangerous driving practices will not be tolerated. Drivers must strictly comply with traffic regulations as mandated by the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law,” he added.

Giwa reiterated the state government’s commitment to enhancing road safety, underscoring ongoing efforts in enforcement, traffic control, and public awareness to protect lives and property on Lagos roads.
