‘Two goal umpires’: McGuire’s bold call for arch technology

“The Arch is there as an aid. The goal umpire is still there to make the decisions.

“The worst place on earth to stand is between the goal posts as a powerful pack of men, who are all about 85-90 kilos with murderous intent to touch a ball, descend on the one spot where the little weedy umpire is.”

McGuire was quick to add that he believed the league was dissecting the “wrong part” of the incident.

“No, I don’t think it was (touched) and I’ll tell you why, because they’re looking at the wrong part of it,” McGuire said.

“If you watch the trajectory of the ball, it didn’t deviate. There might have been a little scratchy-scratchy, but it didn’t come up.”

As for what McGuire suggests the league do next, he is eager to get his new-aged football into the mainstream game in order to reduce costly confusion like Saturday night.

“I’m involved in developing a ball with a chip, which would actually tell you whether or not there was a deflection, or at least enough of a deflection to give that free kick one way or the other,” McGuire said.

But the ex-Collingwood president knows it’s not going to be easy or cheap for the AFL to make the required improvements ahead of the finals.

“In this situation, people say ‘why don’t they put a super slow mo camera?’ The super slow mo camera costs a fortune and you can’t put them on every post in Australia,” he said.

“You’ve got to remember there’s parallax error. There’s all sorts of different things.”

McGuire’s suggestions come after Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd also raised concerns with the AFL’s goal line technology on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“If this was a final or a grand final, this goal line technology is the best that we’ve got?” Lloyd said on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

Carlton now look likely to finish in the top six, facing the 15th-placed Gold Coast Suns on Saturday.

Meantime, the Demons are eager to lock in a top four finish with a win over the charging Hawks on Sunday.
