UCL: I refused Vinicius’ request to take penalty against Man City – Valverde

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde confirmed he declined a request from teammate Vinicius Jr. to take a penalty during the second half of the Champions League Round of 16 match against Manchester City.
Valverde had previously scored a hat trick in the first half, contributing to Madrid’s commanding lead. The opportunity for a penalty arose after Vinicius was fouled by Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Despite Vinicius offering the spot kick to Valverde, the Uruguayan declined, and the penalty was ultimately saved by Donnarumma.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Valverde explained, “Vini Jr. asked me if I wanted to take the penalty. Vini is a Real Madrid legend and a great friend. My teammates and I encouraged him to take it.”
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Valverde added, “Vini missed? These things can happen; it’s part of football.”
