Ukraine Seeks Support from Gulf Nations Amid Ongoing Conflict
Kyiv, Ukraine – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Sunday that Ukraine has dispatched specialist teams to Gulf nations, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, as part of efforts to counter Iranian drone attacks amid the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran.
Zelenskyy explained that the teams were sent to assess drone defense capabilities and provide demonstrations to help protect countries in the region, which have become targets due to their association with U.S. military operations. “This is not about being involved in operations. We are not at war with Iran,” he stated during a press briefing.
As part of the initiative, Ukraine is looking to negotiate long-term agreements for drone technology and financial support in exchange for its assistance. “For us today, both the technology and the funding are important,” Zelenskyy noted.
Throughout the four-year conflict with Russia, Ukraine has gained experience in countering Iranian Shahed-136 drones, which have been deployed by Moscow. These encounters have equipped Ukraine with valuable expertise in intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles through various means, including drone interceptors and electronic jamming equipment.
U.S. President Donald Trump, however, has indicated that he does not require Ukraine’s help to address Iranian drone threats targeting American interests.
Zelenskyy also expressed frustration over the lack of a formal drone agreement with the U.S., despite months of negotiation. He mentioned a proposed deal valued between $35 billion and $50 billion that remains unsigned.
Moreover, he raised concerns that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could impact the supply of air defense missiles to Ukraine. “We would very much not like the United States to step away from the issue of Ukraine because of the Middle East,” he remarked.
In light of rising interest in Ukrainian drone interceptors, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for stricter regulations on procurement processes. He warned that some foreign entities are attempting to bypass the Ukrainian government to engage directly with manufacturers. “A contract comes to me through the political channel. Only then does the private sector start negotiating with us,” he stated.
As the situation develops, Ukraine continues to seek international support while facing the challenges of a protracted conflict.
