Nigerian Government Issues Safety Advisory for Citizens in Iran and Gulf States

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an urgent safety advisory for its citizens living in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighboring Gulf countries, citing rising military tensions in the region.

The advisory comes in response to recent airstrikes conducted by Israel and the United States on targets within Iran, followed by Iran’s retaliatory actions in several Gulf nations.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA/PR/2026/21), Nigerians abroad have been urged to exercise increased vigilance and adhere to safety protocols amid the unfolding situation.

The Ministry provided several key recommendations, including:

  • Maintain Awareness: Citizens should stay alert and avoid areas near military, strategic, or government installations that may become potential flashpoints.

  • Limit Movement: Non-essential travel is discouraged, and citizens are advised to postpone gatherings or public demonstrations until the security environment stabilizes.

  • Follow Local Instructions: Compliance with local authorities’ directives is strongly recommended for personal safety.

  • Stay Informed: Nigerians are encouraged to rely on credible local and international news sources and to avoid misinformation. Monitoring official updates from both Nigerian and host country authorities is advised.

  • Maintain Contact with Embassies: The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, along with missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, remains on high alert to provide consular support and facilitate communication for Nigerian citizens.

The Ministry reassured citizens that it is closely monitoring developments and will issue timely updates as necessary. It emphasized that the protection and welfare of Nigerians abroad is a top priority.

Additionally, the advisory called for all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic dialogue, highlighting the importance of engagement for regional stability and global peace.

The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
