Wayne Rooney’s Derby County relegated to League One from the Championship

Wayne Rooney’s Derby County side have been relegated from the Championship following their 1-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

The Rams had needed a positive result away at QPR to have any chance of preserving their Championship status, but Luke Amos’ 88th-minute goal in the game sent them to League One from the Championship.

Derby County were handed a 12-point deduction early in the season after entering administration. On November 16, they were given a further nine-point deduction for breaching EFL accounting rules. That led to a 21-point deduction, a deficit that ultimately sees them relegated.

Without the deduction, they would have been on 52 points and 17th in the Championship. As it stands, they are 23rd, on 31 points. They have been relegated as they have only three games left and a gap of 10 points to 21st-place Reading.

Derby head into League One despite picking up 13 wins and 13 draws this season,  a record that would have seen them comfortably avoid the drop had they not been hit with that mammoth points deduction.

Derby had been in the Championship since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2007-08.
