WBBL thriller ends in chaotic super over

A thriller in the WBBL was settled via a super over, as Kiwi slogger Sophie Devine smacked a six on the first ball that left viewers and match callers stunned.

The usually reliable Jess Jonassen was given the ball, with the Scorchers trying to eclipse Brisbane’s score of 12.

Brisbane had tied the game with two on the last ball of the match, before Anneke Bosch chipped in with a couple of boundaries for the Heat in their super over.

But Jonassen’s first delivery was a slow, looping full toss that was smashed back over her head for six.

“She gets a gift straight away,” said commentator Andrew Maher.

“That is the worst ball Jess Jonassen’s ever bowled!”

Brad Hodge said the delivery was a “shocker”, and it put the Scorchers in the box seat after the 20 overs had finished with the scores level.

After Devine and fellow opener Beth Mooney traded singles, she was back on strike with the Scorchers needing five to win from three balls.

It was another powerful strike back over the bowler’s head, landing right on the boundary rope and ending the match.

“That’s the danger of Sophie Devine,” said Lisa Sthlelakar.

“It didn’t come off in the 20 overs of the allocated match, but in the super over, she shows what she’s worth.”

It was the opening match of the tournament for both teams, and Perth joined Adelaide, the Melbourne Renegades and the Sydney Sixers among those who won their opening match.

The Sixers made it a two-from-two start earlier on Sunday in the first match of the double header, chasing down the Hobart Hurricanes’ score of 125 with three balls to spare, condeming the hosts to their second consecutive loss.
