Christian Youth Group Backs Clergyman Amid Controversy
A Christian youth organization, affiliated with the Plateau Christians Youth Forum (PCYF), has expressed strong support for Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo following backlash from Muslim leaders regarding his recent comments during a mass burial.
Rev. Dachomo, the Barkin Ladi Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), made headlines after referring to Allah as a “bloodsucking god” while discussing the violence faced by Christians in Nigeria’s Plateau State. His remarks, delivered at a funeral for youth victims of Islamist attacks, sparked significant outrage among Islamic scholars and community leaders, who have called for him to cease statements they deem inflammatory.
Critics assert that Rev. Dachomo’s comments could incite tensions between Christian and Muslim communities in the region. Some groups, including “The Fulani Defenders,” demanded that authorities arrest and prosecute him, highlighting concerns that his statements could disrupt the delicate peace in Plateau State.
In a statement, the Fulani Defenders criticized Rev. Dachomo’s remarks, emphasizing, “It is quite unfortunate that at a time everyone is preaching peace and harmony, he is doing everything possible to set the natives against the Hausa-Fulani.”
In contrast, the PCYF defended Rev. Dachomo, asserting that his words were made in a moment of grief. The organization’s coordinator, Markus Malum, cautioned Muslim leaders against further attacks, stating that the group would hold them responsible for any harm that befell the clergyman.
“The Plateau Christians Youth Forum has noted with dismay the attacks and threats on our father in the Lord, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo,” the statement said. “These comments were made during a mourning period for youths who were brutally killed by extremists.”
The PCYF called for heightened security measures for Rev. Dachomo and urged authorities to address the threats against him. The ongoing tensions underscore the fragile interfaith dynamics in the region, as various community leaders seek a resolution amid rising concerns over safety and peace.
