Why Afrobeats went global faster than Nollywood – Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde
Nollywood Actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Discusses Funding Disparities Between Music and Film Industries
Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde recently shared insights into the rapid global rise of Nigerian music, particularly Afrobeats, compared to the slower expansion of Nollywood.
In a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Jalade-Ekeinde attributed this discrepancy largely to differences in funding. She noted that the financial requirements for producing music are significantly less demanding than those for film production.
“What is holding Nollywood back is mostly funding,” Jalade-Ekeinde said. “In music, it is not as expensive to create content; lavish music videos are exceptions rather than the norm today.”
She emphasized that simpler, viral concepts often resonate more with audiences than high-budget productions. “Many artists are now creating content in informal settings, such as their homes, which feels organic and appeals to viewers,” she explained.
Jalade-Ekeinde further elaborated that the collaborative nature of filmmaking presents additional challenges. “Even the least expensive film typically involves a cast and crew of around 30 people,” she noted, highlighting the resource-intensive nature of the industry.
