World Hijab Day: MPAC calls for inclusion, decries discrimination in Nigeria

Disu Kamor, the Executive Chairman of the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), commended global advocates for the hijab on World Hijab Day, highlighting their role in promoting understanding and acceptance of Muslim women who choose to wear it. He called for increased inclusion and an end to discrimination against hijab-wearing women and girls, acknowledging that these advocates have significantly contributed to dismantling stereotypes and fostering harmonious relationships among diverse communities.
Kamor expressed concern over the persistent discrimination faced by Muslim female students in Nigeria, particularly in southern regions where restrictive hijab policies are more prevalent. He pointed out that such discriminatory practices violate constitutional rights related to freedom of religion and expression and are antithetical to the principles of a pluralistic society.
Reinforcing MPAC’s support for hijab-wearing women and girls, Kamor characterized the hijab as a symbol of faith, identity, and resilience. He urged Muslim women to maintain their confidence in wearing the hijab as a legitimate expression of their rights. Additionally, he called upon governments, educational bodies, and community leaders to revisit and eliminate discriminatory policies while fostering an environment of inclusivity, respect, and understanding.
Kamor encouraged continued collective efforts from hijab advocates, emphasizing that collaborative action is essential for creating a society where women can practice their faith freely and with dignity. He reminded Muslim women of their rich tradition rooted in the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and assured them of the support of a global community of believers.
Observed annually, World Hijab Day aims to raise awareness about the hijab and combat discrimination against Muslim women worldwide. Kamor’s statement serves as a rallying call to continue advocating for the rights and dignity of hijab-wearing individuals.
