13 injured as bus overturns, crashes into barrier on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Thirteen Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Bus Accident
Thirteen people sustained injuries on Friday when a Mazda bus lost control, overturned, and crashed into a concrete barrier on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. on the Lagos-bound section of the expressway, within the Remo North Local Government Area.
Akinbiyi Babatunde, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the details of the accident in a report released later that day. The crash garnered significant public attention after Nollywood actor Kunle Afod raised concerns about the emergency response, urging the Ogun State Government and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to assist the victims.
According to TRACE, rescue teams, including personnel from the FRSC, arrived at the scene by 12:48 p.m., shortly after the accident occurred. The bus involved, registered as AKD 52 XY, was carrying 18 passengers at the time of the crash. The agency reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle following a tyre burst, leading to the bus overturning and colliding with the barrier, which helped prevent it from falling into a deep ditch alongside the road.
Witnesses indicated that the tyre burst was the primary cause of the driver’s loss of control. Among the injured were two men, eight women, and three children, but officials confirmed that there were no fatalities in the incident.
All 13 victims were transported to three different medical facilities for treatment. One victim was taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, while nine others were admitted to Divine Hospital in Ogere. The remaining three were sent to Isara General Hospital. A follow-up visit to Isara General Hospital later that day revealed that four injured individuals were treated and subsequently discharged at their request.
The damaged bus was removed from the site and taken to TRACE’s holding facility for further investigation. Officials noted that the rescue operation did not hinder traffic flow on the expressway, and the coordinated efforts of TRACE, FRSC, and other emergency responders helped restore normal vehicular movement in the area.
