2026 World Cup: Ian Wright reveals why Argentina won’t win trophy

Former Striker Ian Wright Questions Argentina’s World Cup Defense

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has raised concerns about Argentina’s ability to defend their World Cup title following a narrow 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in the Round of 32.

In the match held in Miami, Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Argentina. However, Cape Verde’s Deroy Durate equalized, leading the game into extra time. The Argentines reclaimed the lead through Lisandro Martinez before Sidny Cabral scored a remarkable goal to bring the match level once again. Ultimately, Argentina secured their place in the Round of 16 with a critical goal in the 111th minute.

Commenting on the match during an ITV broadcast, Wright stated, “They are there to be beaten. If you can give the same kind of endeavor we saw from Cape Verde, but have more quality in the final third, then Argentina are there to be beaten. I think in the wide areas they are very weak. You can get at them in those areas.”

As the tournament progresses, Argentina will need to address these vulnerabilities to continue their championship defense.
