2027: 22 political parties submit membership registers to INEC

INEC Confirms Submission of Membership Registers by Political Parties Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have met the requirement to submit their membership registers in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2026, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
This information was communicated in a statement released on Friday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
“INEC wishes to inform Nigerians and stakeholders in the electoral process that all 22 registered political parties have successfully submitted their membership registers to the Commission in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026,” the statement read.
According to INEC, the submissions followed an extension granted to the political parties after concerns regarding the original deadline were addressed in a meeting held on March 24, 2026.
Initially set for April 21, 2026, the deadline for the submissions was revised to May 10, 2026, in line with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the schedule for party primaries. All parties successfully submitted their registers by May 8, 2026, two days prior to the revised deadline.
INEC noted that political parties were allowed to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026. The registers were required to be submitted no later than 21 days before each party’s respective primaries.
The Commission emphasized that the submitted membership registers would undergo verification, reiterating its commitment to ensuring free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in 2027.
